Life Insurance for non-US citizens, aliens and immigrants

Non US-Citizen Life InsuranceIf you are a non-US citizen or resident, it is natural to be concerned about your life insurance options.
The good news is that it could be possible for you to buy life insurance coverage even if you do not have a permanent US residence.

To be classified as a non-US resident, you will be residing outside of the US for more than three months per year or, you will not have a permanent US residence. This classification would cover those who are visiting the US for business purposes and only live here temporarily, professionals/students who are here for educational or similar needs, or immigrants that are awaiting their permanent residence status, which could often take months or even years.

Alternatively, you might be someone who is visiting on a visa, even though these visas are temporary, it is still possible for you to obtain life insurance coverage in the US.

In the first situation, that of a non-US resident, generally the life insurance company will require you to be in the US long enough for the life insurance application, including any medical examinations, to be completed. Typically, this can take around 6-8 weeks, so you would need to plan your time here accordingly. It is also likely that your proposed insurer will want to see medical records, which will also add to the processing time.

In the second situation, those who are visiting on a visa, the insurance provider is likely to want you to have been living in the US for at least six consecutive months. They will also need to know your future plans if you intend to remain in the US permanently. The longer that you have been a US resident, the easier the process will be.

The visa holder may obtain coverage with financial backing and/or assets and a residence in the US.

This is NOT the case for green card holders, as they are permanent residents and can obtain life insurance like any US citizen, with 12 months residency.

If you have to leave the US due to a change in your situation, usually your insurance provider will have factored in the likelihood of this happening, prior to accepting coverage.
